UPDATE Carrie Fisher, 'Princess' Dies Aged 60, Mother Debbie Reynolds Dies 1 Day Later At Age 84
As if Losing George Michael Wasn’t Bad Enough:
Debbie Reynolds, the Oscar-nominated singer-actress who was the mother of late actress Carrie Fisher, has died at Cedars-Sinai hospital. She was 84.“She wanted to be with Carrie,” her son Todd Fisher told Variety.
Marie Frances Reynolds was born in El Paso, Texas; when she was 8, her carpenter father moved the family to Burbank. At age 16, “Frannie” entered the Miss Burbank Contest, winning in 1948 for her imitation of Betty Hutton singing “My Rockin’ Horse Ran Away.” She was spotted by Warner Bros. talent scout Solly Baiano, who signed her to a $65-a-week contract. Studio head Jack Warner renamed her Debbie — against her wishes, she said.
Daughter Carrie Fisher died Dec. 27, 2016; Reynolds is survived by her son Todd, a TV commercial director from her marriage to Eddie Fisher; and granddaughter, actress Billie Lourd.
Carrie Fisher, who rose to fame as Princess Leia in the “Star Wars” films and later endured drug addiction and stormy romances with show business heavyweights, died on Tuesday aged 60
The news, comes days after she was reported to have suffered a heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles, was confirmed in a statement released on behalf of her daughter Billie Lourd and though her mother Debbie Reynold said mthat she was ‘stable’ I had my suspicions that things werfe bad because Fisher was on a ventilator. Since this is RESL Life I didn’t expect a miracle like with Ally Novak suddenly opening her eyes.
Lourd’s publicist said: “It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8.55 this morning. She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”
Her brother Todd Fisher had earlier told the Associated Press the actor was being treated in an intensive care unit but said that he could not classify her condition.
Fisher was returning from a book tour in the UK when she taken ill. According to passenger accounts, she fell ill 15 minutes before the plane landed and was given aggressive emergency treatment to stabilize her condition.
Her family have said details around her illness remain unclear. Celebrity website TMZ, which first reported Fisher was unwell, cited anonymous sources claiming the actor suffered a heart attack. Her daughter, however, later told the AP that many details about her condition or what caused the medical emergency remain unknown.
The daughter of screen legend Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher, the actress made her Broadway debut as a teenager in Irene, which starred her mother. After making her big screen debut in 1975’s Shampoo and briefly enrolling in London’s Central School of Speech and Drama and then St. Lawrence College, Fisher dropped out, at the age of 19, after landing the role of Princess Leia in George Lucas’ 1977 space epic Star Wars. She would go on to reprise the role in subsequent films, most recently appearing in 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
